Letters to Brother

My mom's in Hawaii and my brother is at home. He's nearly 18 and hasn't been bothering to go to school like he should. I spoke to the attendance lady at his school today and she says he's been missing a lot of school.

I called him at home, woke him up and told him to get his butt to school, even though he was already late. A few minutes ago, I was looking at MySpace and saw that he is online. The following is the message I sent to him.

You had better have left your computer on while you are at school.
Do you know what is the most frustrating part for me? Knowing that you're smart enough to know better but you just don't care. And that there is nothing I can do or say to you to make you understand that it's not ok for you to behave like this. and that you'll get away with it because your parents don't want to look like failures if you fail. But this is on you. You have to be responsible for yourself. No one is going to help you or support you if you don't try. I don't want to see you fail, and I don't want to see you travelling down the road I am seeing you go. But Honestly? If it were up to me? I'd let you go there just to show you the consequences of your actions. Because I love you and if you fail, it's your fault and none of us can save you. You have to do it for yourself. And obviously, you're not going to learn how to swim for yourself if we keep rescuing you. I want you to learn that it's YOUR life you're fucking up. And Eric, Honey, you're fucking up.

Bravo!

I think you set just the right tone there, FWIW.

Not that I have a dog in this hunt, but still...

Bravo.

Thank you. It's tough because I know what I would do in my mom's shoes, but I also know what she will do.
I know someone who will have a babysitter tonight though. I wish I had known about this Monday.

Eric, as one speaking from experience, do everything you can to finish school with as high of grades as possible.

I know it can be difficult. School sucked for me on all sides. True friends were few. Teachers were a pain. Even my mom was hard to deal with.

Unlike you, my family did not care about me. As a result, I went through high school barely getting grades. Not because of my own lack of ability, but because I lacked the motivation to do the work.

How I wished once I turned 20, that I could go back and do high school over. I would have just buckled down, knowing that every kid I went to school with would no longer be part of my life once I graduated.

I wish there were a way to implant this thought into every highschool kid in America: Once you get out of high school, nothing, other than your education will matter.

Your education is what will make your life easier. The more you learn, the faster you will be able to do what you want for the rest of your life.

People who get rich and have an easy life are those that got an education. Even rock musicians, the ones with staying power, not the one-hit-wonders, focussed on education, many being taught advanced classical music.

Also, learn that your education does not stop at graduation. Learn all you can from everyone you can. Treat the garbage man as your instructor, and you will learn from him.

THe only ones you should never learn from are those that show themselves to be fools.Stay away from them because all they will do is teach you how to be foolish.
