If you want him in your life in some way or another, than yes. If you have determined he's pretty but don't need the hassle, than no. Also...you have to not care what his response is, if he has any at all.
(totally not helpful, I know!!)
he would likely be a good friend (if he's not back on drugs, he was totally sober when I met him) I don't think his response would be bad, because I know (from a mutual aquaintance) that he knows why I ended things. But your advice isn't useless. It just affirms how I feel.
